Seiya is considered to be the leader of the
Starlights, being the main vocalist, guitarist,
and composer of the Three Lights, as well as
having an air about him that exudes confidence
and leadership. We first meet him with Yaten and
Taiki as they're giving a concert, then later we
get a glimpse of Seiya as he passed by Usagi
giving her farewell to Mamoru as he leaves for
America. Later, the Three Lights are being chased by a
mob of fangirls (the five girls also in that group).
Usagi gets lucky and meets Seiya one-on-one
without realizing who he is, or his famous
status. He only sighs, "I guess I'm not as
popular as I thought."
Later we find out that Seiya has transferred into Usagi's school along with Taiki and Yaten. Taiki gets a seat in front of Makoto, Yaten the empty seat next to Minako, and Seiya the seat behind Usagi, much to her dismay. Eventually the three idols become close friends with the girls, mainly because Seiya and Usagi had been running into each other relentlessly; Usagi clueless of Seiya's identity as an idol, and Seiya casting his charms and referring to Usagi as "odango atama," or "dumpling head." According to Usagi, that nickname is strictly reserved for Mamoru's use.
Seiya is the most boyish and energetic of the Three Lights, as well as the friendliest and most easy-going. When looking for clubs to join at school, Seiya attacks all the sports clubs, beating first the basketball team, then nearly defeating the American football team. He's a good sport, loves to tease, and the energy and attention that being on a sports team brings is just the kind of atmosphere he thrives in. He also shines beautifully on stage; he definitely knows how to attract people.
Out of the Three Lights, Seiya is most
definitely the one that opens himself up to his
temporary life on Earth, immersing himself
fully, both physically and emotionally. He gets
attached to people he meets, and seems to be the
one Starlight that gets most grounded on Earth,
happy with the new friends he's made not only in
Usagi but also with the other four girls. His
laid-back and open attitude often allows him to
lose sight of his goals, and leaves him in the
middle when the Outer Senshi and the Starlights
have a clash of values. Sometimes he seems
lonely, especially with Princess Kakyuu gone,
and perhaps just loves the attention he gets
from being an idol because it relieves himself
of his loneliness.

It's almost obvious at the beginning of the
series, with the amount of chance run-ins that
Seiya and Usagi have, that Seiya would grow a
romantic interest in Usagi. The two started as
hardly friends, even; Seiya teased Usagi, who
thought him to be highly annoying. As they
became closer, the teasing still went on between
the two, but it became more playful and it was
obvious the two were good friends, and that they
cared for each other. Eventually, Seiya asked
Usagi if she had a boyfriend. When she said,
"Yes, I do, overseas." He replied,
"Then that means I have a chance!"
Usagi never caught onto his feelings until he
directly confessed them to her, near the end of
the series.
The two make an incredibly fun couple to watch. Before they get caught up in the drama caused by their growing friendship and Haruka and Michiru's disapproval, they were often found in awkward situations. Seiya once asked Usagi on a date; she was the only one unaware that it was supposed to be a date date, rather than a friendly outing. The two also found themselves alone together at Usagi's house, taking care of Chibichibi. Everyone could feel the vibes that were coming from the two; Ami was even found jumping to conclusions about them. Usagi's friends reminded her that she had Mamoru already. But all the while, Usagi kept oblivious to Seiya's feelings.
Perhaps what attracted Seiya to Usagi so strongly was the fact that she didn't see him as an idol from the very beginning. Their first few meetings, Usagi didn't even know his name or recognize his face. Further on, when she realized he was a member of the Three Lights, she was already too familiar with his teasing and flirting ways to see him as an unreachable idol figure. She treated him as naturally as any other of her friends, and that made Seiya feel like he belonged.
While Yaten's a cynic and Taiki's a thinker, Seiya's definitely a feeler. He puts his all into what he does and leaves himself vulnerable. In her Sailor Starlight form, she is the only one of the three who is soft to Sailormoon and the Inner Senshi, tormented by the separation caused by their alter-identities. She finds herself stuck in the middle because of her feelings for Usagi, and the conflicting wishes of the other two Starlights, who believe that she is just getting off-track and disillusioned. Seiya is a great character, and definitely adds interest to the series with his/her feelings for Usagi.
