- - - - - - - - - - /// Taiki in Depth

Taiki, the intellectual of the Three Lights, loves to spend time writing poetry or pursuing another form of self-improvement. He has a habit of reciting lines of poetry at random, more often than not confusing Usagi (who has no idea what he's talking about) while he's at it. His brains match those of Ami in the anime, and actually manage to beat her on an exam in the manga.

Taiki is most definitely the mature one of the Three Lights, always with a calm composure and a polite nature. While Seiya is passionate and Yaten aloof, Taiki is smart and tactful. When the Three Lights get a day off from work, Taiki spends it relaxing by himself rather than going out. He's indifferent towards Usagi and the girls, not avoiding them nor going out of his way to spend extra time with them. Taiki regards his stay on Earth as temporary, and is patient enough to wait to find Princess Kakyuu before leaving. He has no trouble keeping this in mind and in result keeps himself distant from any emotional attachments. He sees the world in logical and scientific terms.

While on Earth, Taiki develops quite a rival in Ami. Though he's calm and polite most of the time, it's clearly obvious that Taiki has an ego due to his valuable intellect. When Ami comes along and they score a tie on an exam, he sees this as a threat to his ego. Either that, or he sees Ami as someone who can finally compete with him, and takes full advantage of this to make for some healthy competition. I'm sure the guy gets bored with being smarter than everyone around him as a default, and it's a change of surroundings when there's someone who can actually match him. So Ami and Taiki compete (mostly subconsciously) in everything from schoolwork to card games. Often times one can just see the sparks flying between them as they exchange glares, bent on beating each other.

One thing that Ami has and Taiki lacks however, is the conviction and belief in things that cannot always be proven scientifically. Taiki is logical to the extreme, and in that manner he's cynical about things relating to people's aspirations and dreams. If something looks doubtful in the logical sense, Taiki assumes that it's most likely not going to turn out like the person wishes it to. However, Ami is convinced that the power of belief helps things come true. This is where the two have a clash of values. Ami shows Taiki a side of the human intellect that doesn't always work logically, and is rooted in dreams.

Though Taiki doesn't expect it to happen, he's affected a lot by Usagi and the girls. Ami affects the way he sees the human mind, Makoto helps him learn how to cook for a cooking show that he has to star in, and Usagi makes him laugh without meaning to. These seem small accomplishments, but Taiki is hard set in the way he sees the world. He knows he's smart, so he's not very open to other ways of thinking since he's so sure that his way of thinking is correct. It's not often that Taiki opens himself up to criticism or laughter; when Usagi made him laugh twice, Yaten and Seiya remarked on how rare of an occurrence it was.

Taiki is deeply concentrated on his duties as a senshi and his intellect, but at the same time he's often too serious. Usagi and the rest of the girls help him open up, think differently, lighten up and have a good time.

As Sailor Starmaker, Taiki is extremely devoted to Princess Kakyuu, as the rest of the Starlights. Her attack is also the strangest of the three, named Star Gentle Uterus. Most people would hear this and think, what was Naoko Takeuchi smoking when she thought this one up? But it actually makes more sense when you consider Sailor Starmaker's position. As Starmaker, she creates. Therefore her attack isn't random, and it makes sense that Sailor Starmaker has an attack referring to that part of the female body.

Though Taiki is the most down-to-earth of the Three Lights, he does know how to have fun every once in a while, like the time the group went camping and the Three Lights decided to scare Usagi and co. He definitely changes a lot through the Sailor Stars season, opening his mind and heart to people and to the power of beliefs, regaining hope for the future once again.
