Rei's personality is nothing short of frantic, panicked, worry-wart, sincere, and older-brotherly. When it comes down to it, Rei is a simple person with simple wishes in life. Not much is known about his background, especially concerning his family. He was homeless when Sana found him and offered the job of being her manager, and his family is never mentioned of throughout the Kodocha series. He becomes connected to the Kurata family deeply; at the end of the series it's evident that Rei is definitely a part of the family. While he's certainly not a fatherly figure to Sana or a childlike figure to Misako, he fits in there somehow. The Kurata family is not normal; none are bound by blood. There's Misako, Sana, Maro-chan, Rei, and their housekeeper. These people fit together in a strong bond and Rei is extremely grateful to be among them, to have a family he could call home. Rei spends a lot of time taking care of Sana. He doesn't like to see her hurt in the least and tries to soften the blow that the media might have on her. When there are rumors flying wild about Sana-chan, Rei will try to avoid talking about them at all costs. When Sana's career is looking bleak due to some overreacted scandal, Rei will be the one running from one company to another, doing his best to find a job for Sana. When something goes wrong or there's a setback to Sana's career, Rei's the one who takes it straight to heart. Sana's laid back and doesn't get bent out of shape about things, but Rei... he's so frantic that one can't help but worry about his health. He takes many things out of proportion. Rei is a sincere, down-to-earth guy. Because of this, he's extremely easy to read; he's like an open book. Every emotion he feels shines on his face; there's no mask to conceal what he's thinking. He worries and cares about people and gets bent out of shape about things that don't deserve the fuss. However, his worry is sincere and it's because he wants the best for the people around him. Rei often puts other people's desires and feelings first and foremost, while snuffing away his own feelings. If Asako wants to go abroad to study and he knows he will miss her, he doesn't say anything. He wants her to be happy studying. If Sana wants to take a break but he wants her to take an opportunity and take on more jobs, he lets her take a break. If he wants to pursue his relationship with Asako but his work as Sana's manager hinders him from it, he puts Sana's work top priority. A complete nice guy to heart, Rei gets pushed around a lot throughout the series. Many times he gets pushed around by Sana, who has a limit on how long she can stand his overprotective side. Other times it's Misako, who badgers Rei about taking care of Sana, and her constant threats: "if anything happens to Sana, you're dead." There's also Hayama, who always gives Rei DA look. When Rei found out Hayama had started karate, his heart skipped a beat. Hayama, his worst enemy, the devil kid, taking karate? The world had come to an end. In the New York Arc, it was the Hamiltons who told Rei that if they didn't take perfectly good care of their kid, he was a dead man. Rei ended up babysitting through the New York Arc with his doom hanging over his head. There's always Rei's love life to give him a hard time, too. Talk about problems, you think Rei has had enough? All the stress is sure to cause his hair to fall out early in life. Rei's love interest throughout the series is Kurumi Asako. She's an actress and has been in the acting business for quite a while. The reason Rei and Asako broke up before the series began was because Asako wanted to pursue her acting career seriously. Rei didn't want to get in her way and they ended up going their separate ways. However, they were both constantly thinking of the other. Rei collected posters and magazine cut-outs of Asako, while Asako tracked down Sana because she knew Rei was her manager. Many of Rei and Asako's problems revolve around Asako's acting career (her dedication to it) and Sana (Rei's dedication to her). Many times Asako is in movies with kissing scenes. Rei obviously gets jealous but doesn't mention it. There was once a rumor that Asako had decided to get married with a colleague of hers, which drove Rei mad with envy. Being involved so closely in the lives of two popular actresses must be tough on the guy; there are always so many rumors and Rei usually ends up stuck in the middle. With the complications that Sana's life brings, Rei grows a lot through the series. He's pushed around by managers, parents, corporate producers, scriptwriters, Sana, dangerous karate-learning sixth graders, his girlfriend, and the media. And he keeps going through the thick and thin and gains maturity. He learns to focus attention on himself rather than sacrifice all his feelings for others. And at the end of the series, he knows he's got a place he belongs. He knows he has a family and a direction in life, and he's happy. <-- Character Info |
