Tsuyoshi with a really funkay hat on. :PTsuyoshi is Hayama's best friend. He's a down to earth, fickle, somewhat goody-goody, worry-wart guy with huge glasses. Compared to Hayama, he's a very open person. He's often times the one who tries to stop Hayama's bad ways at the beginning of the season and takes the side of the girls instead of wreaking havoc with the rest of the boys. He's the only male character to be good friends with Hayama, especially from the beginning.

At the start of the series, many people in their class teased Tsuyoshi for being a "mama's boy" because he loves and cares for his mom so much. They teased the way his mother worked at the grocery store, always bowing and saying, "Thank you very much," three times in a row. You see, Tsuyoshi's parents get divorced towards the beginning of the series and he lives with his mother and younger sister in a small apartment. His mother has to support them both. Tsuyoshi, knowing that he's from then on the only male in the family, tells them that he will be strong. He cares for his mother and sister very much, and has mixed feelings about his father.

The reason for their divorce is because Tsuyoshi has a father that has an awful, out of control temper. Tsuyoshi would sometimes come to school with band-aids and wounds on random parts of his body and Hayama would always wonder why. Later in the series, Sana and Hayama get to meet Tsuyoshi's dad, who gets enraged at both of them because of Hayama's his smart-ass comments and almost hurts them during his rampage.

Like father like son, Tsuyoshi got his father's bad temper. Sure, Tsuyoshi might seem quiet, laid-back, and peaceful on the outside, but when people tease him or his family (his mother especially), or when he gets jealous, he snaps. His eyes gleam evilly and he goes homicidal, attacking everything in sight. It's actually rather funny to watch. At school, every single year, he has an angry outburst in class because people tease his mother. It's almost like an annual festivity. First, the subject of Tsuyoshi's family pops up. Then his mother, and the next thing you know, the boys are making fun of her and how they see her in the grocery store. Tsuyoshi clenches his fists, his eyes gleam from behind his glasses, and his teeth turn into sharp fangs as he lifts his desk over his head, shrieks RARRRRRR!!! and starts wreaking havoc, chasing the entire class around the room. Everyone is caught in the wreckage and there is only one thing that can stop him: Hayama's karate chop.

Hayama is really protective of Tsuyoshi, as he is with everyone that he cares about. When people tease Tsuyoshi about him caring for his mother so much, Hayama immediately backs him up and takes his side, telling them off. "What's wrong with loving your own mother?!" he once said at all the boys while carrying a recently karate-chopped Tsuyoshi to the school nurse. Hayama, being an intimidating figure in the classroom, instantly put the teasing to a rest with his words. Not having a mother himself, Hayama was angry at the rest of them for teasing Tsuyoshi for simply loving her. I'm sure it's also a sore spot for Hayama in that manner, because the boys in the class seem to take their mothers for granted, while Hayama never had one.

In return Tsuyoshi cares about Hayama's sake. He hates to see Hayama causing trouble and blackmailing the teachers, doing the bad things that earn his intimidating reputation. At the beginning of the series, he wants Hayama to stop for the better, so he always tries to help Hayama not be so sneaky. He joins forces with Sana and tells Hayama's weak spot to her: his fear of heights. And then they go together and get blackmail on Hayama himself! Though Tsuyoshi double-crosses Hayama in that manner, his intentions are simply for the better, so Hayama would control his actions.

Tsuyoshi at first had a crush on Sana. So when Hayama started to like Sana himself, they were declared rivals. And when Hayama stole a kiss from Sana at Tokyo Tower during a social studies trip, Tsuyoshi went psycho with anger and nearly tore down Tokyo Tower, throwing tables and chairs all over the place, chasing the whole class up and down stairs trying to find Hayama to tear him to pieces, nearly foaming at the mouth. It goes without saying that he was quite upset.

But Tsuyoshi is very fickle when it comes to the affairs of the heart. The only reason he liked Sana so much is because she gave him a Valentine's chocolate the year before. And that ended up merely being a coincidence! Sana, being a complete airhead and not thinking about the consequences of her actions, had an extra Valentine's chocolate left. She had been giving chocolates out to everyone in their grade. So, running down the hall, she spotted Tsuyoshi, and handed the chocolate to him in a hurry. Tsuyoshi was instantly head over heals in admiration. He was upset when he learned that Sana never meant to give him the chocolate and it was only an accident.

It turns out, however, that there's a girl in their class who likes Tsuyoshi. Sugita Aya, a rather shy girl, ends up having a crush on him. One day in class, the boys start teasing Tsuyoshi again. Sana and Hayama immediately burst to action, about to silence them, when someone else speaks up. Aya stands up, red in the face, and tells all the boys to shut up. Then she exclaims, her blush deepening, that she likes Tsuyoshi. Oh, the drama.

Hayama, taking this chance to get rid of his rival, tells Aya that Tsuyoshi's weakness is food. Offer him any kind of homemade food, and you've got the guy hooked. So Aya makes him some cookies and delivers them to his house himself. Tsuyoshi decides that Sana isn't the one for him, and his love-love life starts with Aya. The two are rather down-to-earth people and are rather lovey-dovey. XP Throughout the series they somewhat represent anime couples that are overdone and extremely mushy, but that's what adds humor to their relationship. They'll hug and cuddle and have hearts floating all over them, while everyone else stares at them like "¬¬." But not all relationships go without the bumpy times in between! Tsuyoshi, being a rather fickle person, gets into quite a pinch!

One day, he opens up his shoe locker at school, and there's a love letter and a present from an anonymous person. The next thing he knows, Tsuyoshi is getting more presents, and is falling into a pit of despair because he's thinking more about the anonymous notes rather than Aya. His feelings get cloudy and start to sway for this unknown person. His imagination runs wild. Could it be Sana? Hisae? Mami? Who was it? He starts to feel guilty and distances himself from Aya. As Sana says, "Tsuyoshi just won't fully boil!" which means he can't make up his decision. When he learns that it's nothing but a prank by the boys in the class, he's ashamed of himself and feels horrible. The next morning he sees Aya turn down someone who asks to go out with her by saying, "Sorry, I already have someone I like." And Tsuyoshi realizes that just because someone gives you a present, you don't have to like them. :P

Since it's in Tsuyoshi's nature to be wishy-washy, Hayama and Sana ask Aya what she's going to do if his feelings ever sway again when someone else gives him a present. She simply replies that she'll bake him more cookies. This is her strategy for keeping her guy whenever he starts to sway. XP Hayama says, "So if Tsuyoshi gets a present for someone, Sugita is going to bake more cookies? So that means that Tsuyoshi will never be able to get away from these cookies. Whoa, scary. Tsuyoshi's been caught by a woman whilst only in elementary school." Little does he realize that he's in the exact predicament himself. :P

Though Tsuyoshi's feelings swayed for that little bit, it was never anything serious. His feelings were still strongest for Aya, even if he did become confused by the presents that were given to him anonymously. Tsuyoshi is like that; he often believes rumors, or his feelings sway at first, but the follow-up on these things isn't strong. For example, there was a magazine article about Sana, saying that she was extremely stuck up and sited various pictures taken out of context as proof. Aya and the others immediately backed up Sana, saying that she wasn't self-centered and they were all rumors, but Tsuyoshi did believe them for a second. Then he was instantly set straight by Aya. :P If Tsuyoshi ever strays with his feelings, Aya is always there to correct him. She understands his nature and becomes his support, without being offended by the things he says (such as with the whole present prank), since she knows that they're not serious. She takes care of him well.
