The Clow Cards (pronunciation: Clow rhymes with "crow," not "cow") all have their specialties and they are caught throughout the series by either Sakura or Shaolan. When Clow Cards are caught, they automatically go to the person who deserves them. For example, if Sakura is the one who tames the card and manages to turn it into its true form, the card will automatically fly into her hands. Even if Shaolan was to pick it up, it would escape his hands and go straight to Sakura. The Clow Cards have a way of knowing who deserves to control them.

The Clow Cards were created by the extremely strong magician/sorcerer, Clow Reed, hence their name. Clow Reed must have been quite a weird creative guy to be able to come up with some of the random, off the wall cards in the pack. The cards vary from sweet flower power to the aggressive Watery, from the helpful Jump to the destructive Firey. They come in all shapes and sizes. While most of the time the cards will be shaped as humans, there's also a rabbit, firefly, sword... There is no limit to how the Clow Cards are shaped and what kind of powers they have. They span from all over the spectrum; you never know what's going to pop up next. There are many cards that you might think of as completely useless to begin with (or just downright silly) but you'll be surprised with where they come in handy through the series.

The Clow Cards rest within the book of the Clow and are guarded by two guardians: Kereberus (Kero-chan) and Yue. Kero-chan is signified by the inscription on the front of the book, while Yue is signified by the inscription on the back. Kereberus stands for the sun and Yue the moon (Yue means "moon" in Chinese). As the sun is independent and radiates energy on its own, Kereberus gets his power independent of the master of the Clow Cards. In comparison, the moon is dependent; Yue is dependent on the power of the master of the Clow Cards. The master's power is what sustains Yue. While Kero-chan is independent of the level of power the Clow Card master has, Yue is bound by it.

The Clow Cards and the two guardians eventually learn to love their master. Whenever a Clow Card is caught, they gain affection for their master (or mistress, in Sakura's case) and an unbreakable loyalty. There are 52 cards total. Listing below:

Each card has its own specialty. There are four main cards, the most powerful ones and hardest to catch and control. These are: Firey, Watery, Earthy, and Windy. They stand for the four elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind. Go figure.

The Dark and Light are counterparts of each other (as are The Big and The Little).

Each of the Clow Cards are connected to either the power of the moon (Yue) or the power of the sun (Kereberus). Cards can be used either by themselves or together with one or two other cards at the same time. The Clow Cards can be used as Tarot Cards to predict the future, but they give no clear answer; the one using them as Tarot Cards must know how to interpret them well.

The Clow Cards have their own secrets and strange connections that reveal themselves over time to the Clow Card master (or mistress). Eventually Sakura learns to control them with better efficiency and the cards grow greatly fond of her.
