Eriol is a mysterious enigma that appears at the beginning of the third season. As it usually happens, Eriol is a transfer student in Sakura's class and the first person that his eyes travel to among the students in the classroom is Sakura. Sakura thinks to herself that somehow it feels she's met him before. Meanwhile, as the two stare at each other, Shaolan is already aware of a new rival. With nothing better to do than to simply stir things up, Eriol comes into the lives of Sakura and co. as a living bomb. Though Sakura is, as one can expect, completely oblivious to the effect that Eriol has (especially on Shaolan), she takes him to be a new friend and nothing more. On a number of occasions Sakura mentions that it feels as if she's known Eriol forever, and notes that his presence is very calming. Of course, this friendly bonding between Eriol and Sakura is disastrous for poor Shaolan's nerves, which skyrocket with his jealousy. Meanwhile, Tomoyo is thrilled by the turn of events. As she videotapes Eriol courting an unsuspecting Sakura on the first day of school, she can only squeal in delight at the high drama. This reaction, I'm sure, also mirrors those of the fans watching from their television screens.
Eriol tends to stir trouble in more ways than one. Throughout the third season, he is the driving force behind the schemes that Sakura has to overcome in order to convert the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards under her name. Eriol's whole purpose is unknown to everyone until the very end of the series, where he exposes his true identity and purpose in coming to Tomoeda and relentlessly testing Sakura's strength as the master of the Clow Cards. Obviously Eriol's soul is much older than that of a fourth grader, and he seems to have kept most of his abilities from his past life as Clow Reed. Eriol watches over Sakura and, as a kind of fatherly figure would do, he pushes Sakura so that she would improve herself. Though Eriol certainly does cause trouble, there is a purpose behind his schemes. His purpose in coming to Tomoeda is to completely break off the Clow Cards from his power. He wants Sakura to transform them all into Sakura Cards and to increase her own magical ability. So he continues testing her until the final showdown. One thing Eriol does not lack is a sense of humor. He's hard to see through with that mysterious, untouchable air of his. He always has a kind smile to offer everyone, though sometimes he catches people off guard or makes them wonder whether he has any ulterior motives. I personally believe that Eriol simply loves to torment Shaolan to the edges of his insanity and does it all on purpose. How can he resist, when Shaolan's reactions to Eriol's flirting with Sakura are so darling? Eriol lives in Tomoeda in a gigantic house with only two other companions: Nakuru and dear Suppi. His gigantic house is quite impressive, almost mansion-like. One can only wonder where he found the money to get his hands on that beauty. Then again, when it comes to Clow Reed, he leaves a lot of people wondering about a lot of things. Eriol, like his identity in his former life, has his own way of doing things. He doesn't really mind that some people may see him as an oddball. He lives his life in his own way and without any concern to what other people may think of his lifestyle or his methods. Probably, if you ask Eriol what his hobbies are, he will reply with, "Confusing people," or, "Leaving people in a state of complete loss." He loves doing both and is quite good at it, if I may say so myself. Everyone he meets, he leaves a certain impression on them (whether good or bad). He never leaves unnoticed.
Eriol's habits and manners somewhat resemble that of an Englishman. This is explained by the fact that Eriol is from England. Go figure. He has that certain sophisticated air about him that makes him seem as if he'll whip out a cup of tea at any random point and ask, "Would you like some tea, ol' chap?" His warm yet distant personality has just the right balance required to charm everyone. Eriol is always in control of the situation and hardly ever lets his composure slip. If there's anyone pulling the strings of a highly secret, covert operation, Eriol is your guy. He brings spice and confusion into the CCS series; what's there to not love about him? |
