Card Captor Sakura is a cute and original magical girl anime based off of a manga (comic) series with the same name, and consists of 60 episodes and two movies. If this is your first time of hearing about this anime and you'd like to know more about it, this is the best place to start reading. How did it all begin, you ask?

The very first episode ("Sakura and the Mysterious Magic Book") starts with Sakura having a dream. Sakura sees an image of a book opening before her. "Who? Who is calling me?" she calls out, then she sees herself standing on the roof of a building, facing the Tokyo Tower at night. She is dressed in a strange yellow outfit with a pink hat and a pink cape, and she holds a strange-shaped baton in her hands. Cards fly all around her. Sakura says something, and a little flying stuffed doll with wings turns to her. She then steps onto the corner of the building as small wings appear on her feet. Then she slowly goes forward... and starts falling off the building...

"Hoeee!" Sakura's alarm clock goes off and she thrashes around in her bed, then she sits up and looks around her room sleepily, holding the alarm clock. "It was this sound." she says as she yawns and looks at the clock. Sakura lives with her father Fujitaka and her brother Touya; her mother Nadeshiko died when she was three years old. Her best friend is Tomoyo, and she has a crush on her brother's best friend Yukito. This is Kinomoto Sakura, the normal and average fourth grader before she finds a magical book in her basement that unravels her magical powers and sends her on a ride that she couldn't have imagined even in her wildest dreams.

Sakura has many strange visions, and almost all the time they predict the future. This shows how much magical power she possesses. The dream that she had in the first episode is a foretelling of the future. In that very same episode, Sakura finds a book called "The Clow" in her father's library in the basement. It glows a strange golden color, and Sakura picks it up. When she opens the book, she finds a stack of cards lying in it. The first card has a word on it. When Sakura reads the word on the card, "Windy," a huge gust of wind appears around her and all of the rest of the cards in the book fly away and scatter around all over town.

Right after the wind dies down, Sakura sinks to the floor in shock, when a small yellow creature with white wings emerges from the book. The little creature introduces himself as Kereberus, but Sakura dubs him Kero-chan for short. He has an Osaka accent (an accent from the southern part of Japan), and he got the accent because the book was in Osaka for a period of time, and the accent stuck. The guardian of the Clow Cards, Kero-chan's duty was to never allow the Clow Cards to run free, because if they did, they would cause all sorts of commotion in the world.

Unfortunately, Kero-chan had fallen asleep while on duty, and he was asleep for about 30 years. Since Sakura broke the seal on the book and let the cards free, that meant that she has some degree of magical power, because regular humans would never be able to break the seal. Kero-chan announces Sakura to be the world's only Card Captor, destined to catch the Clow Cards that were scattered. Though Sakura wasn't happy with her fate at first, she soon learns to accept it.

The Clow Cards were created by a very powerful magician named Clow Reed. Each Clow Card has its own features and its own personality. For example, the card "Windy" that Sakura saw first has the power of holding things down with wind and also blowing gusts of wind around. When Sakura called out the name of the card, it caused all the Clow Cards to scatter. However, Windy is a peaceful card and isn't very aggressive. Watery, on the other hand, is an extremely aggressive card and could overpower and beat Windy because Windy is too peaceful to fight back. Sakura often has to think of different strategies to catch each different Clow Card.

Sakura also has to keep all of this stuff a secret from the rest of the world. It's never a good thing when other people see Kero-chan talking or moving, or Sakura using magic. However, after Sakura caught her first card, Fly, Kero-chan showed her how to use it, and they both flew up in the sky for a while. To their dismay, Tomoyo saw them flying, and she saw Kero-chan moving and talking. Tomoyo, however, did not panic or freak out about the situation. In fact, she was very excited for Sakura being the world's only Card Captor and she ends up taping all of Sakura's Card Captor fights, designing and putting together the outfits that Sakura wears when she is fighting the Clow Cards, and becoming good friends with Kero-chan.

Later on, Sakura meets a rival. In episode 8 ("Sakura's Rival Appears!"), Sakura's first rival appears on the scene. He is a descendant of Clow Reed himself, and his name is Li Shaolan. He comes from Hong Kong and at first he looks down on Sakura and tells her that she is not good enough to be a Card Captor, making her confidence and self-esteem drop dramatically. However, Shaolan is a rival to Sakura in more ways than one. Not only is he fighting Sakura for the possession of the Clow Cards, but he is also going against Sakura for the affection of Yukito. Yes, you heard it right. Shaolan has a crush on Yukito at the beginning of the series. Whenever Sakura and Yukito ever start to talk or have a good time together, he immediately gets jealous. However, Shaolan is way too shy to make a move, and whenever Yukito comes near him, he blushes insanely and runs away nearing speed of light. Later on in the series, however, Shaolan and Sakura work together as a team a lot, and it seems that Shaolan's feelings are changing for someone else.

Further on, in episode 20 ("Sakura and the Fighting Exchange Student"), Sakura meets her second rival, of sorts. Meiling, who is also from Hong Kong, comes to Tokyo because Shaolan has been gone for a long time and she misses him. She declares that she is Shaolan's fiancée, and follows him around everywhere, worshipping the ground he walks on. She is a stubborn girl and never gives up. Just like Shaolan, Meiling's relationship with Sakura doesn't quite start on the right foot. Meiling constantly gives Sakura threatening looks and gets jealous of Sakura because she is better at gymnastics, at catching the Clow Cards, at running, and everyone adores her. Meiling also doesn't have any magical power, so she can't catch the Clow Cards. But she tries to help Shaolan as much as she possibly can.

There are many different characters, relationships, and sub-plots in the story of Card Captor Sakura as Sakura tries to catch the Clow Cards, and that's what makes CCS the great anime that it is! Will Sakura be able to catch all of the Clow Cards on time? It is said that if the Clow Cards are not caught, something awful and terrifying would occur. Many people believe that it's even worse than the destruction of the world. You'll have to watch the anime on your own to find out what happens.
